yesterday i meet a friend
and her baby who is almost one

he is such a big and delightful chappy
i hope to be friends with him for many years

we went to the gardiner museum for ceramics
and saw betty woodman's show, which made me remember

art is awesome
and in betty's case gorgeous and colourful and simply wonderful
the show goes to june 5th hurry hurry hurry

this weekend is the annual yard sale at the textile museum
good finds for cheap, and a bunch of other textile obsessed shoppers
plus a fund raiser for this toronto treasure house

walking the owen
and blooms
and green
and grass
and rain
and sun

and sidewalks

and today
a big machine
eatting an old school
that will be someother something

and as the crane tore into the flesh of bricks
i saw i did the ghosts of old students pore out
and it made me sad and the waste of this
what looked like a perfectly good building
and i recalled images of poor shacks called schools
in distant lands and could of weept right there

and felt all punk rock
and wanted to put my bother boots on
and kick it

but instead i saw the next blooms
of some tree
so pretty

and thought
circle dance is better than some progress

one step forward one back

out and about

we wake to day luxuriously late

and unwrap the present of this day

with white white wonder

the streets are full of snow

and i am as excited as the dogs i meet
snow day full of glee

we
leap bounds of snow
shuffle along
tracks others have left

owen walks behind me
as i create a wind barrier

we walk
and we walk

and the white colours all the other colours

suddently the painted lillac trellis speaks to me
as we shuffle along

the sky is white too
grey white

the sun behind snow
smaller and wanting

and we trudge along
one foot in front of the other

two feet followed by two feet
clad in small red rubber boots
with woolen socks home made
my faithful owen follows

diligent in the journey
pretending to be an old dog
but really a relaxed dog
some might call lazy

we run into a small pack
playing wildly nipping
and barking with the general air of partying

owen waits on the outskirt of this
appealing to the humans
wondering if any food offerings are available

i stand back as well,
a little too gleeful
and impractical about this crazy dumping of
awesome, yes awesome powdery fantastical snow

i am taken back to the times of childhood
but mostly embrace the profound silence that is bestowed
even in this frantic city

all the dogs smile at me
every single one

then owen and i head home
trudging back

at this point
everyone is out
shovelling the stuff

and there are people present outside familiar houses
that i have never seen before

the city becomes smaller
as we are all under this white blanket
of wintery possibility and duty

and coming home on my tired legs
inside i pick off the snow balls on owens tired little legs
melting them with warm hands
one as big as a golf ball

and giggle at the humorous sight of my companion
wearing an icy mask from breathe and cold and snow

inside we eagerly eat our breakfasts
and owen deservedly naps

I am reading a book entitled 'The Outlander' by Gil Adamson.

From the back cover:

"In 1903, two vengeful brothers and a pack of bloodhounds track a mysterious young woman across the western wilderness. She is nineteen years old. Half mad. A widow by her own hand. "

So I haven't washed in a week, other than my teeth because that can lead to tooth decay an irreversible dilema.
I have washed my hands and face, but haven't bathed. Getting that western wilderness unwashed feeling. I have been working solitaire at home alone, my daughter enjoys her own brand of deshelvelment and my husband has a dull sense of smell. It's deep winter so when I go outside I wear a big parka and a talk neck tube scarf and a hat, so I figure my smell is contained besides it's breezy outside and I am accompanied by my dog who I can blame for any escaped stench.

I am enjoying the sameness each day of putting on the same clothing as the day before. Today on Fashion Television there was a feature discussing the 'uniform' of different designers, often a black tee and dark jeans. Einstein had a uniform of suits and John Cage had a uniform of denim. My uniform is khaki and olive greens and grays, my favorite neutral. It is very nice not thinking what to wear and the familiarity of the same clothing each day. I am also reminded of cartoon charactors like Nancy and Tin Tin. It is sort of a vacation, a mini sloth experiment, a fermentation.

I do have a social occasion coming up this Friday and in honour of this I will bathe throughly and put on fresh clothing. I haven't decieded if I will launder the clothing I am wearing or come up with a new 'uniform'. Something to be said for relaxing the hygene routine. Saving resourses, water, and realizing how long it takes to get stinky. I am looking forward to the newness of getting clean and know I will really enjoy that.

Books do not come with odour, other that that discribed. Rumbled and relaxed. Mind on other matters and an empathy for the charactors riding horses, living rough. Who says one needs to book a vacation to take one. Austerity as vacation rather than opulance. Experiences and experiments that are accessable to get into the skin of a fiction charactor to test limits and elements and to choose to stop. Social conventions challenged. Exploration in daily routines.

Just thought I would share my enjoyable some what malodorous state.

Remainders of the Lunch

ahh you have lost your lunch bag...

oh well it seems they only have a shelf life of half a year

happy the old lunch box is found

left to fester in a warm school for the holidays

i didn't consider this until i opened the bag

stepped back
and then leaned in

wafting out an odor i can only describe as green
and not in an inviting way

lean in

an unidentifiable element
almost round
completely green
and powdery
like a spawn
an alien
nothing earthy
up until now

no stranger to fungi
as i did do a science fair
on the subject

growing small amount of mold
in tiny baby food jars i keept in the fridge

spores
space ships

lean in
and find
what is this new thing
initially repulsive
not edible for certain

a strange mutation
of an orange tangerine
i conclude

and i am a little less repulsed
a little smitten with this
powdery disolving orbish creature
who i didn't give a name

but
plundged a plastic fork into
and disposed of carefully
incase it was catching

you never know
how things will appear
and the challenge of seeing past
your preconcieved notions

and intense prejudice
of food gone bad!

but given half a chance
the possiblility in that mold
the powder
the green of it

was kinda

well

this is today

i woke very early
and instead of pretending to be normal
and getting me required eight hours

at five
i rose

and made a puppy who is blue
named ralf

then i went into the mountain of laundry
laundry mountain

and putting on my scaling equipement
started the climb

used bleach
this is new

and folded a bunch
and put it in large plastic bag
like the laundromat that takes in laundry
and charges 20 a pound

fresh

then the tub
called me
and the terrible cleaning product
because really it's embarassing but it is grey

and the fumes woke my daughter
what the heck is this awful stuff
but i think it is working magic
on my martha stewart dreams

then i ate old pizza and new tea
and bea my girl
told me she isn't feeling well
it's that time of year
so i called the school

and feed the pets
and did more laundry
and took the dog out
first putting him into the equivilant of a snow suit
perpetually two
i put him in little rubber boots with socks to make
taking them off easier
because of the salt

and returned the depressing but well made film
to the library

and we meet up with a cute weiner dog
who had anger management issues
and yelled at my dog
and scared me
not so cute

and then while the computer warmed up
she's old and finicky

i swept under the love seat
and owen the dog tried to help
eat the dust bunnies
but i shoed him away

and the hanukah is ending tonight
and the tree is up

and things keep coming in the house
like flyers
and greeting cards from people who sold us something
like insurance
and stuff like presents
some we eat
others we wear
others linger

and i am reminded of the heap to charity
that i haven't called for pick up

and all the magazines to read
and books and patterns

and the dust
which likes to settle down
and make its self at home

it's only 9:30

will my tub become sparkling
will the fumes intoxicate us
will we be okay

my smile isn't super white
my teeth are like that

Thank you to all that made the Crafternoon Tea as lovely and tasty and fun as usual.

Lots of my wooly friends found good homes, here are a few of the stories:

Tiny a little bear who likes big things is going to a big baby, that will surely make him happy. Huggy found a young man named Liam who is keen to introduce him to the other soft friends he lives with. Francisio a green puppy with a red polka dot leash will be a surprise for a very special four year old boy. Maximillion Stuffnsuch is boldly going to go to work at the office of a woman who enthusiastically took him home.

The last Sunday of September offers us Word on the Street.

Sunday September 26th in the lovely Queen's Park in Toronto, many words and pages will be in this extraordinary literary event!

I too will be there in mind, spirt ,body and stuff. I will be exhibiting some of my work for sale under the banner 2 X 4 to the forehead, in the Fringe Beat section of the festival. I will be sharing a space with my witty friend James Spyker who is a fine, word smith and book binder.

In addition to being involved with my own table full of mirth. I have done some illustrations for The Story Walk produced by the MTML (Metro Toronto Movement for Literacy) Very exciting indeed. about 30 with flying flag regalia of beer ,bands , tats and skulls

with the prettiest pink mohawk ever

delivering me a required scowl and snear

the owner past middle age, asian, slightly plump and relaxed hollered from the table

'hey i like your hair'

'thanks man'
he answered

the owner enquired further
about the hairdo.

'how long it take you to do your hair,
about 2 hours?'

the pink mohawk wearer replyed

'about 15 years'

i waited enjoying the chinese opera, and the old woman that was complaining
and the awesome clashing of floral patterns and the wobegon way the staff did what they must

i got a huge bag of food to take out
the sun glared and i wore sunglasses

and remembered what one of my art teachers used to answer
when someone asked how long it took him to do a certain piece of art

'all my life'

perhaps another answer is

'about 15 years'

the food was a little greasy,
but i knew it would be
but it was delicious

and along with delivering it home
it came with a story at the dinner table
about a very pretty pink mohawk

it's 11am now
do you know where your punk rocker is?

i see two when i look in the hedge
balanced very nicely
a custom buildt nest

so close to us gawky
huge humans

i have seen the mother over them
feeding them
away from them
trusting the little chips
with promise of return

how lucky am i
to witness tiny nature
in this big smoke
of a city
and little infant chips
and odd growing in feather fluff
and such awesome newness
and nature!

the dog got clean very clean indeed with lots of mountain man hair shaven to produce a handsome city chappy

then the dog got dirty rolling in a remnant of an unnamed deseased animal

the dog got clean with water jug and bath tub and was very tolerant of this new clean idea

in between i heard about a dog
that came barking
only the barks were silent

as called out 'dog with laringitis'
and said once again

Thank you to all that came to say hello and visited me and my wares yesterday at Wayzgoose.

The day was bright sunny and very very hand made bookish which was indeed grand!

A special thank you to Tamara who loaned me her awesome poetry dispensing machine ,the famed Verse-o-Matic. Thank you to my pal Krissy who helped me get it home. I was delighted to fill the Verse-o-Matic with Kim's Suitcase products especially tiny little books with Japanese paper covers. The use of the vending machine was particularly exciting as when I was a wee girl I happened to take a spin on such a machine and obtained of all things a teeny weeny bible. Barbie loved to read it especially before going on a date with Ken...but i degres. At yesterdays book fair a very small girl who had never had the opportunity to turn the crank on such a machine chanced to receive a book made by me! I think we both shared the same degree of delight. Again thank you to James, my dear book selling friend and to his car that got us to the show. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers at the show for again making wayzgoose a lovely time. Many many thanks to all!

and we got caught in rain

and said 'isn't it good to get wet,

i wore sun glasses
and followed my sandled feet

bright weather heat
feels too glossy to me
like overmade up make up on an already beautiful face

Being short means you can go out trick or treating for Halloween for the rest of your life, I keep trying to convince my Mother who is 87 and 4 foot 11 ( and shrinking) that she could go as an old lady...(the photo is of my Mum going to school for the first time at about age 3, and her beautiful greyhound)

I am thinking of doing the same. At 5 foot 1, I too have been awarded the prize of trick or treating for life!
(I do feel a little sorry for those really really tall 11 year olds that get questioned)

The strangest trick or treaters was a family with a new born (like days old), Mother, Father and Grandmother. All not dressed up. The grandmother held the baby and presented it to me when I opened the door.

The oddest thing I ever got trick or treating was a grapefruit, a guy didn't realize it was halloween and rumaged around his fridge for a while and plopped a grapefruit in my halloween bag.

in the eaves,
leaves

and dropped words
and phases

waiting to visit you

roll them over with the side of your shoe

a pile of freshly fallen words

today in the pile
the sun up and out
and down and under
rain and clear

in a matter of minutes

i found the word carried on the wind

'aquamarine'

and a mum says to her son

'yahh like the colour of the ocean"

...the great thing about knitting is you can unknit,
a do-over is totally possible

learning curve in the curve of the neck,
trying to do a jig when all that is required is the box step...

cryptic, unclear pattern, not seeing the pattern,
learnt a few things along the way...

i like that.

in the grocery
store

is a blind
woman

lead gently
round the isles
by a young grocery store clerk

smashing coloured clothing
pale pink and vermillion together
shocking colours which are lively
and deliciously vibrant

behind milky eyes
holding firm to the shopping cart handle
fred and ginger
couldn't of made it around the store any better

a smile of encouragment
and in the next isle
the dairy case
words between the young man
the old blind woman

the basket filling with
the finest looking produce
and the best priced yogurt

another milky-er world
soft around the edges
requiring no pretense or pretend
as far as trust is concerned
and the need for another pair of eyes

at the check out
still enamoured with the divine coloured clothing
and the sweet young man
that finds
in helping
he too is helped

insects and two men on the bus

insects hum

each one i invite
and visit
investigate

two men on the bus
speaking in slightly too loud conversation

about going for a ride to drink a cup of coffee
catch a flick
ask each are you married

girl friend
broke up eh?

a little insect rides my knapsack
crawls the long grass that is arm hair
up the thin pale hair and down the otherside
we ride together
and also converse
but silently

i note the colour
and lightness
the delicate nature
the moving creature
as i become landscape
and amusment

the travellers
with the voices
are reading lines to a play
they once saw
or parts made up just for them
slow loud plodding
with silences that are like cement blocks

outside in the garden this morning
i see a snail dismount a flowering plant
up and over fluid and slow and quiet

black bird flys over head like shadow

underside of a leaf reveals a spikey guy
orange and black

and then one of the flyers comes by
translucent winged

small and large
fever dreams like alice

why dig for dinosaurs
when the exotics are all around
yet to be named tinies

where did the men part company?
how is it they came to meet on my streetcar?
what happened to my travelling companion that liked my arm hair?

summer happens
hot and thick and breezy
shade trees become refuge from hot sun

alive-ness in insects keep me in wonder
a ballet
a factory
a work camp
a ferris wheel

it is easy to travel
so easy with a patch of green

i have been having 'back issues'

had to miss work...
which was sad,
and working

but also became better friends with the tree outside my bedroom window.

and rekindled the activity of watching dust motes in the sun.

reading frida kahlo's biography lot's of back issues there
very appropriate reading while being confined to a bed

back and forth

core issues
must strenghten

having something physical hamper one
teaches a lot

being in physical pain
a very different perspective

i am feeling better now
but am humbled
and reminded
of living in a human body

drawing too
little things when i got as far as the backyard
dandylion flowers and wind blown twigs

frustration of course
limitation testing

accepting
and letting go

such big lessons
in small ways

forth

and
letting

things be
as they
are.
